In 2021 there were 5,932 motorcyclists killed. That is 14% of all traffic fatalities for that year (NHTSA, 2023).
Share the road and be alert. As a motorcyclist, make sure to make yourself visible and use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends the following gear when you are out on the road (see https://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/Protective_gear_REV.pdf):
- Helmet
- Face Protection/Face Shield
- Goggles
- Gloves
- Jacket/Pants/Riding Suit
- Rain Suit
- Hearing Protection
Driving a motorcycle requires skillsets and knowledge different than those needed to drive a car. All states require a motorcycle license endorsement to supplement your automobile driver's license.
To receive a proper endorsement in most states, you need to pass written and on-cycle skills tests administered by the state's licensing agency. Some states even require you to take a state-sponsored rider education course.
In Colorado there are a multitude of motorcycle education and safety courses available.
For more information for motorcycle riders in Colorado visit the Colorado DMV and read the Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook.
